Imagine your icon running around desperately in a storm, soaked by rain, hair plastered to their forehead, skin paled and sickly as they look for you, calling out your name with increasing urgency.

I was just taking a stroll around town, enjoying the rain which was much needed, when lightning struck so close, I could almost feel it course through me. The gentle rain picked up into a fierce storm and I started rushing home. I was just a block away when I heard a faint cry over the pounding rain.

It was a strangely familiar voice, and it was calling my name. I moved towards it and then I saw a person. It took a second to see clearly through the rain, but once I did, I froze in terror. For I recognized that face. That face stared back at me from picture frames and mirrors. It was me.

I moved forward, approaching cautiously, until I was able to see myself clearly. “Looking for yourself?” I called.

“Thank God I found you, I have a warning.” He said, his complexion gray and losing more color by the second. “Do not trust the lady in red, she brings only pain and loss.”

“Who is that? Actually, how are you even here?”

“I don’t have time to explain who, but I can say that I’ve been Between.”

“Between? On a dragon?”

“An alien, same type of ability.”

“Okay, what do I do if I see this lady in red?”

“Turn away from her, do not approach her, and, most importantly, do not let her touch you!” There was a beep, “My time is up, good luck.”

There was a crack and a hooded figure appeared. It touched my future self on the shoulder with a nearly skeletal hand, and they both vanished with the same crack.

I got home, put my soaked clothes to dry, and went to bed. I woke up the next morning and went to work. I had a better than usual day and left in high spirits. As I walked to my truck, I saw a woman wearing a very attractive, and very red, dress. I was about to follow my instincts and try to talk to her when I remembered my encounter.

I looked away from her for a second and looked back to see her face as a mask covering something horrendous. I hurried off to my truck and thought about going to the Library.

What people don’t realize is that Sherlock is constantly mocked and bullied. His flatmates meet him, realize he’s hard to be around and leave. He doesn’t have any friends, his own brother only seems to care for him because he’s family and might cause a bad image, but otherwise doesn’t give a flying fuck about him.

At work, he’s called ‘freak’ and his deductions are doubted even after they’ve seen hundreds of solved cases under his reign. Lestrade is only his friend because he’s useful, he calls Sherlock a right git and doesn’t do anything to stop Donovan or Anderson from mocking him and making his job harder.

Ms.Hudson is his landlady, the second person who doesn’t show outright care for him, but to a mind like Sherlock, he assumes it’s because she feels indebted to him. It doesn’t make sense for her to actually care about him, he’s ‘heartless’ and ‘freakish’ to everyone around him so why would a sweet old lady care about him?

Above all, Sherlock is utterly lonely. He’s got his experiments, he’s got his work, where he’s bullied and mocked so much that he promptly ignores and then he has the occasional flatmate that try to befriend him and suddenly stop caring when they’ve had enough.

And then there’s John Watson. Sherlock expects him to leave, that’s why in the beginning, he’s more charming then usual, winking at him when he leaves, smiling when they go to check out 221b and getting reservations for dinner. After the drugs bust, Sherlock is sure John will leave— not even Mycroft cared when he found out about the addiction and at least part of Sherlock is craving attention.

Sherlock is probably the most lonely person on the show. Not John, the quiet blogger. Not Lestrade, the man invested in work when it’s his division. Not Ms.Hudson in her quiet dusting and “Not your housekeeper”s. Not even Molly with her silent wanting for Sherlock. Finding John was probably the best thing that could happen to him.

it’s funny because it looks like the sherlock fandom are sane here

Sherlock bustled about the kitchen, throwing a cupboard door open and pushing aside a box of nicotine patches to retrieve two mismatched mugs. A kettle whistled plaintively in the background, like it had been trying to draw attention to itself for a while now. Setting the mugs aside, Sherlock absently pulled the kettle off the stove, poured tea into the two mugs, and carried them into the living room.

Doctor Who was sprawled over the same chair it had collapsed into last night, when it had appeared at the door muttering inanely about lost regenerations and knackered navigations systems. It made a whining noise as Sherlock tucked the shock blanket it had thrown off in the night back around its shoulders.

Supernatural was in similar straits, curled up on the floor with a throw pillow and a tattered trench coat around its shoulders and alternating between sobbing and muttering about domesticity potential.

A thudding on the stairs indicated the ruckus had finally awoke Merlin, who poked its head into the room, hair sticking up at all angels as it tied its scarf around its neck. Blinking blearily at the mess, it seemed to realize what had occurred when it picked up a discarded bow-tie from the floor, holding it between forefinger and thumb, “Is it that time already?”

“It was bad this year,” Sherlock whispered, trying not to exacerbate the already fragile fandoms under its care.

“I remember what that was like,” Merlin muttered, running a hand through its hair and pulling a cape off the nearby coat rack, “I’ll go to the store. We’re out of milk again. May as well pick up some fish fingers, custard, and salt.”

Supernatural gurgled something quietly.

“No, I won’t forget the pie.”

When the Ninth Doctor first asked Rose to travel through time with him and refused, the Doctor accepted that and moved on. He traveled through space and time, saving the universe, all lonely for years thinking “I wish Rose could have been here.” Eventually, he goes back to a few seconds after he left Rose and says “By the way, did I mention it also travels in time?”

Rose never knew how long the Doctor waited for her.

I think this makes sense. In the episode Rose you see all those photos of Nine at the assassination of Kennedy and at the Titanic (on his own). But also in that episode he’s checking his reflection in the mirror like he’s seeing it for the first time, so he can’t have been long regenerated. So maybe he does all that stuff in the time before he comes back and says “Did I mention, it also travels in time?”

which makes that line even more powerful because this time he would really want her to say yes, because he knows what it’s like without her.

What’s interesting are the events the Doctor (theoretically) chose to visit during that time between when Rose (theoretically) first said no, and when he returned to extend the invitation a second time. Nine was photographed/drawn near the Titanic, Krakatoa, and the Kennedy assassination. All horrible catastrophes with tragic loss of life, all catastrophes that caused profound change in human history, catastrophes that (if Pompeii and Bowie Base One are anything to go by), would likely qualify as fixed points in time.

This leads me to believe that the Doctor was nearly in the throes a Time Lord Victorious breakdown as a result of the Time War and Rose’s rejection. He was dancing around the edges of these fixed points, likely looking for a way to save lives and prove to himself that he wasn’t a vile person. To prove to himself he could make a difference.

To prove to himself that he’s worthy of having someone brave and clever like Rose as a companion.

And Nine (obviously) doesn’t save Kennedy’s life or stop the eruption of Krakatoa, but in the episode “Rose” we find out he DOES save one family originally scheduled to travel on the Titanic by convincing them to delay their trip. A small measure of redemption.

Enough so that the Doctor summons the courage to return to that dark London sidewalk and casually lean out the door of his TARDIS like no time had passed at all, like he hadn’t been scrabbling in the wake of Rose’s rejection. And then he said the words he’d practiced alone in his console room dozens of times, with the exact amount of calculated swagger he’d rehearsed: “By the way, did I mention it also travels in time?”
